First attempt at Drums

This is a early 60's marching band bass drum that is currently in the process of being converted to a full drum set. The shell has been stripped, and stained with Green cake icing dye, and several coats of Satin Finish.This drum belongs to Rodney Fultz .

SMOKING MANGO "DRAGONS BREATH" #5

I learned a valubale lesson with this one. PLYWOOD BODIES are not a good idea for this process. It did turn out to be one of the better looking guitars but the plywood really does shine through. This is a 2000 ish Kramer owned by Scott Vantastic of Deaf Angel. I used food coloring , green black and blue to get this effect just right followed by Daft Gloss Finish .

Smoking Mango "K5K Brown Sugar" p bass "#4

This is a 2000 Squier P-bass Smoking Mango custom. The theme on this was to go old school vintage John Paul Jones style/punk. This one was stained then burned while the stain was still wet. I mixed a walnut stain with oak and a touch of red food coloring. The pick guard is the original, i just spray painted it purple then applied the same stain mix over it to make it look natural. The wooden knobs and gold input jack are from allparts.com . This bass is owned by Kelly Robinson K5K of Deaf Angel.

Smoking Mango Custom "Shotgun Whiskey" #3

This is my third attempt. My own 86 Charvel model 4 I think. My mom got this for me at a pawn shop in 1991 for $450.00 for Christmas. The body was damaged in 1999 and at the time I didnt know how to fix wood. It was orignialy solid black with a Jackson pattened Floyd Rose. I went all out and got a Paul Stanley Seymour Duncan , with a Lace neck pickup and added a wilkinson bridge. For the knobs I ordered 12 guage shot gun shell knobs and bridge from allparts.com . This guitar was not caught on fire like the first two of the series. Mostly went for a whiskey barrel color using traditional walnut stains and mixed with green food color.

Smoking Mango Custom :Sand Monster #2

This is a 99 Samick Smoking Mango Custom. This is number 2 of the series. I kinda want to re do this one. I stained and burned this one as well. After it was burnt I dropped in on the ground and ruined the orginal look i was going for and ended up with a completly different result. (Shown Above) . I made the best of it ,but not my best work. Top Pic is the end result, the one below it is right before it fell. The last picture of this post is the condition it was handed to me in. The goal was to make it look vintage and we acheived that .This guitar is owned by Ian G

Smoking Mango "DEAF ANGEL" #1 of the series

This is the one that started it all. A 2002 Sonata Strat-style Smoking Mango Custom. This one was stained then caught on fire before it dried. I coated with several coats of Daft Satin finish. Added a Seymour Duncan Destroyer, with one volume knob . I branded the Deaf Angel logo in the headstock (featured Above). This project spawned the ongoing series of the Smoking Mango .

Custom Ibanez Blood Soaked Angel ,#6

This is a Smoking Mango custom 2002 Ibanez Rg 170 original color was blue with a nicotene stained neck. I was able to round off the body with a belt sander to look more like the Ibanez S-

Series. The stained used was Cake icing dye found at Walmart in the cake decorating section. Topped off with mulitple coats of Daft Sealer and Satin Finish. I dropped a Seymour Duncan invader and hid the tone knob internal.I have named this one Blood Soaked Angel.My wife Tina of Deaf Angel gave me a challenge to do a wine color burgandy. This is as close as I could get but its more beautiful then these pictures. Extremly light weight and plays very well. I own this guitar ,***Not for Sale ***

Smoking Mango "SMOKED GUITARS"

Hello, If you like my other blog Cody's Easy Meals that Don;t suck you will love what else I do with my smoker lol. So when I was booking bands Smoking Mango was the name that was given to me because I enjoyed smoking mango flavored cigars it stuck. So now days I havent booked any shows in a while but the name still has meaning.

So, it started when Kelly Robinson (the bass player of Deaf Angel) dropped a guitar off at my house for me to fix the wiring in his cheap SONATA Guitar. This was the ugliest paint job I have ever seen. He told me "while your at it you can sand it down if you want". Im thinking cool never done that before. After sanding a guitar for the first time Im thinking wow ,its still ugly . I go out to my garage ,found some wood stain from our hard wood floors and put it on there . It looked cool but it was sticky because at the time I didnt know your supposed to wipe it off as you go. So I thought hey I bet that stuff burns really easy . I told Kelly lets burn this sucker on my grill and he was cool with it . We added gasoline to get the fire going really good then sanded it down again. Longer story shorter after several attempts It turned out amazing. Then my buddy Ian liked his so much he told me to do the same thing to his Samick. Much easier the second time around and done a lot faster.
I finnally decided to do one of my own guitars, a 1987 or 1985 model 4 I think. My mom bought it for me in 1990 for 400 bucks at a pawn shop and held on to it ever sine. The bridge was a Jackson Floyd patent pending over grown peice of crap that broke the body in places. I thought I would never be able to play it again until i figured out it had holes for a normal strat bridge. So I did the same thing to the Charvel with out burning it on the smoker though. I used green and orange food coloring along with some walnut stain mixed together. I used a satin lacquer finish.

I have decided to start refurbing guitars as a form of abstract art in a sense. I dont know what the outcome will be but just like my food its unplanned but dosnt suck. This is a service I will start offering locally to anyone, I dont even want to charge anyone for it because I dont know what the final product will be . My rule is this, 20 bucks for refurbing, I prefer a crappy no name guitar that you absoutley hate and understand that I can only promise it will look and play better than ever. If not then take what I have here and do it, its so fun to watch these guitars have 5 foot flames on them for a few seconds then turn out to be awesome.
